DuBard School at Southern Miss to Host Missing Links in Academics Seminar

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi will host Missing Links in Academics on Nov. 1-2 at the DuBard School. The seminar will benefit second through eighth-grade general and special education teachers, reading specialists and speech-language pathologists. The cost is $250 until Oct. 17. After Oct. 17, the cost will be $275. Lunch and materials are included.

The seminar will provide multisensory techniques for teaching the National Reading Panel areas of reading, which includes the following:

·         Syllable types and syllable division rules

·         Use morphemes as a way of increasing comprehension

·         Ways of building reading fluency

·         Methods of teaching comprehension strategies.

“Utilizing the practice exercises before having to apply them in the classroom was so beneficial,” said Sharron Harris, resource teacher, Vicksburg Catholic School. “In addition, I received good tools, materials and references to take back to the classroom.”

Additional topics to be discussed during the seminar include characteristics of students with language disorders and dyslexia, sound-symbol association, spelling analysis, vocabulary instruction to increase comprehension,semantics, syntax and graphic organizers.

The seminar is approved for 1.2 continuing education units for educators and speech-language pathologists and audiologists (intermediate, professional level).
