Grimes Chosen to Chair Conference on Oceans and Human Health

Dr. D. Jay Grimes, professor of marine microbiology in the Department of Coastal Sciences at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) has been chosen to chair the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Oceans and Human Health at the University of New England, Biddeford, Maine on June 3- 8.

Grimes' co-chair for the conference will be Dr. Tracy Collins, NOAA. In addition to Dr. Grimes, Jeff Lotz, interim director of the GCRL will present a discussion on aquaculture, "Contained Biosecure Aquaculture”. Students attending the conference from GCRL include Corey Russo, president of the GCRL MEGSA chapter. 

There are 92 conference registrants; that number includes two from Mexico, one from France, one from Australia and four from the UK. The conference will have 33 discussion leaders and speakers. www.grc.org/programs

These conferences began in the early 1930's with Professor Neil S. Gordon and were supported by an endowment from the Gordon family, www.grc.org/about . The philosophy of the organization is to promote dialogue and exchange of new ideas between established, well-known scientists and young scientists (graduate students, post docs and early career faculty).

The mission of the Gulf Coast Research, Mississippi's marine laboratory, is scientific discovery related to coastal and marine resources, development of new marine technologies, and the education of future scientists and citizens.
