Southern Miss Biological Sciences Host Night at the Museum Sept. 21

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Biological Sciences will host outreach activities this fall, including unique adventures at its popular science museum.
Kicking off the series is “Night at the Museum: Heart of the Matter” Friday-Saturday Sept. 21-22. The event is an “overnight retreat” for students in grades 4-8.
The September “Night at the Museum” is different from other events since the Biological Sciences Learning Center (BSLC) is partnering with the College of Science and Technology to raise funds for the American Heart Association Heart Walk.
“Since we are raising funds for the American Heart Association, our adventure will include studying the hearts of numerous animals from cows to fish to frogs,” said Michael Sellers, outreach coordinator for the Southern Miss Biological Sciences Learning Center. “The event also offers the opportunity to learn about Mississippi wildlife, see animals, and discover our relationship with nature.”
The BSLC at Southern Miss offers numerous children's activities that include opportunities to learn about the natural world on campus and at a nature preserve managed by the university.
Sellers says participants should pack a sleeping bag, pillow, toothbrush, toothpaste, change of clothes, water bottle, snacks, flashlight or headlamp (a camera is recommended). Belongings should be labeled and limited to one bag. Snacks and breakfast will be provided.
Space is limited. Registration cost is $25 with a portion of the proceeds going to the College of Science and Technology American Heart Association Heart Walk Team. The priority registration deadline is Sept. 14.
Parents and guardians should plan to drop off your child at the BSLC between 6 - 6:30 p.m. Activities begin at 6:30 p.m. and continue until 8:00 a.m. the next morning. Participants should be picked up between 8- 8:30 a.m.
The next event at the BSLC is the annual Haunted Halloween Biology Trail Friday Oct. 26 from 4-7 p.m. The trail is free of charge (with donations accepted) and open to the community. The trail is designed for ages 4-12, but is appropriate for all ages and represents a revised version of the standard biology trail with unique, exciting and spooky twists.
