Southern Miss, Hattiesburg Public Library Collaborate on Teen Book Club

Wed, 11/14/2012 - 09:49am | By: Ashlea Maddox

The University of Southern Mississippi will introduce a monthly book club specifically for youth, ages 12-17, on Nov. 17 at noon at the Hattiesburg Public Library.

The Teen Book Club will give youth the opportunity to read great books, have open dialogue about the stories they read and participate in conversations in a friendly, casual environment that helps connect ideas in the literary works to their own world. The club is a collaboration of Southern Miss and the Hattiesburg Public Library.

Two doctoral students in the university's Department of English, Paige Gray and Laura Hakala, will distribute copies of the first book to be discussed, “The Giver” and guide the group through discussions of the book, as well as find out from the youth what other works they would like to read.

For more information about the first meeting of the Teen Book Club, contact Christina Thornhill at the Hattiesburg Public Library at 601.582.4461, or e-mail chris@hpfc.lib.ms.us.
