The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory's (GCRL) Marine Education Center announces the addition of Angler Camp to its summer offerings for 2014. Angler Camp is for children ages 10 to 18.

Camp participants will master the basics of fishing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast; learning everything from catching bait to cleaning and cooking the big catch. The program is taught by GCRL scientists both in the lab and on the water.

Anglers will learn about fish biology and behavior, how the weather, wind, moon and tides affect fishing, and how to recognize a good fishing spot. Campers will learn good conservation practices, gain an understanding of fishing regulations and learn how to successfully tag a fish. Multiple types of fishing locations including GCRL and chartered vessels will be utilized during the weeklong camp.

The Angler Camp sessions are one week in length and run Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. Two sessions are currently scheduled for 2014.

  • July 14-18, 2014 (ages 10-13)
  • July 21-25, 2014 (ages 14-18)

Besides the “basic training” on how to catch a fish, this camp is infused with vital information about the importance of respecting our natural resources and coastal stewardship.

“The Marine Education Center has a long history of connecting people to our coastal resources and the science that supports them.” says MEC Director Chris Snyder. “Angler Camp is an innovative opportunity to introduce young men and women to the enjoyment of fishing in our coastal waters while providing them the skills and science-based information they need to be responsible stewards of our environment.”

This new camp fits nicely among the MEC's other educational programs such as the long standing Sea Camp (ages 6-13) and newer Shark Fest (ages 12-18).  Any one of these exciting camps would make a wonderful Christmas gift for the child in your life, gift certificates are available.

A $50 deposit will hold a sport. For more information, see the website http://www.usm.edu/gcrl/mec/summer.camps.php, email - marine.educationFREEMississippi or call 228.818.8833.
