Film Program Offering 2-Week Screenwriting Course with Writer David Sheffield

The film program at The University of Southern Mississippi will host the intersession course, “Master Class in Screenwriting,” with Southern Miss alum and former Saturday Night Live writer David Sheffield. The course will be held Jan. 2 – 14 from 6 – 10 p.m. at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The course, designed to introduce participants to the rigors of scripting film or television programs, will teach participants how to follow industry practices under the guidance of an experienced Hollywood professional. Additionally, students will learn to pitch program ideas, develop those ideas into detailed story outlines and then turn those outlines into screenplays in proper industry format.

Sheffield began his career as a writer for Saturday Night Live where he contributed to many of Eddie Murphy's most famous sketches, including Buckwheat, Gumby, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood and James Brown's Celebrity Hot Tub Party. His movie credits – all shared with long-time writing partner, Barry Blaustein – include “Coming to America,” “Boomerang” and “The Nutty Professor.”

In addition to being available to Southern Miss students for 3 semester credit hours, the course is available to the public at a cost of $300 per person through the university's Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach.
