Southern Miss to Host Economic Development Workshop for Elected Officials

The Trent Lott National Center at The University of Southern Mississippi, in partnership with the Stennis Institute at Mississippi State University, will host an inaugural workshop titled, “Basic Community Economic Development: Practical Tools for Elected Officials” on Wednesday, Dec. 11 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and run until approximately 2:30 p.m. A similar workshop will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at MSU's Hunter Henry Center on the campus in Starkville.

These workshops will focus on discussions regarding the important role locally elected officials play in community and economic development efforts. Key economic development topics to be covered during the workshop include:

  • Trends in economic development
  • Physical infrastructure development
  • Downtown revitalization and heritage/cultural preservation
  • Business and entrepreneur development
  • Financing in economic development
  • Strategic partnerships

Participants will learn how careful planning and regional alliances play an important role in creating jobs for Mississippians. Attendees will hear from key leaders and elected officials about successful partnerships that helped attract vital economic and community development projects in the state.
