U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) offered a special welcome to new University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney D. Bennett today at the senator's office in Washington, D.C. Cochran congratulated Bennett on his selection to lead Southern Miss and welcomed the president's vision for improving and expanding the university's educational outreach.

Among other issues discussed, Bennett reported on USM's progress in opening a new School of Nursing using a mix of private, state and federal funds.  Cochran, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, worked over the years to help secure more than $4.0 million for development of the nursing school

Bennett was accompanied on his trip to the nation's capital by Southern Miss Vice Provost for Research Dr. Gordon Cannon and Chad Driskell, executive assistant to the President. Bennett assumed the reins of university on April 1.
