State Rep. Toby Barker, left, and State Sen. Billy Hudson speak to attendees of the Mississippi Association of Staff Council Organizations (MASCO) Day, held recently on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus and hosted by the Southern Miss Staff Council. The two area elected officials spoke about issues impacting higher education in Mississippi, including those that will be addressed in the next legislative session.

MASCO was formed in 1989 to provide leadership and representation for the nearly 15,000 staff members employed at the eight institutions of higher learning in Mississippi. The primary functions of MASCO are to promote interaction between staff at all state institutions of higher learning in Mississippi and to enhance communication between the staff and the Council of University Presidents about issues of mutual concern. MASCO also serves as a channel of communication between the various university staff councils, their recognized counterparts, and university faculty senate/councils. MASCO is also responsible for considering issues of mutual concern and making recommendations to the Council of Presidents when appropriate. (University Communications photo by David Tisdale)
