The first lecture in the 2014-15 Anthropology and Sociology Colloquium Lecture Series features Dr. Christy Mello from The University of Southern Mississippi who will present, "Activism and Community Health: The Politics of Food, Racism, and Neoliberalism in Southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan." Free and open to the public, this event well be held Thursday, Oct. 2 at 12:15 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, room 204.

Dr. Mello's presentation is based on her work with Our Kitchen Table (OKT), a food activist group based in Southeast Grand Rapids that addresses structural racism through its collective food-growing model.  In this lecture, she shares her observations concerning how nonprofit groups and economic developers are further gentrifying these neighborhoods in the name of “food security.”

Dr. Ann Marie Kinnell, chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology believes this event is important to the department, College of Arts and Letters and Southern Miss.

“Over the last four years, the Anthropology and Sociology Colloquium has showcased the research of faculty, invited speakers, and students both graduate and undergraduate. It is an excellent venue for audiences to gain a broader understanding of the breadth of anthropological and sociological research," Kinnell said.
