Fire in the Forest Camp for 4-6th Graders March 22 at Lake Thoreau

Tue, 03/18/2014 - 01:39pm | By: Tara Burcham

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Biological Sciences will host "Fire in the Forest" day camp March 22 in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association and representatives from the Mississippi State Extension Service. This camp will introduce children to fire safety and teach them about the importance of prescribed fire in forest management.

The camp is for 4th - 6th graders and runs from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The cost is $40 and includes lunch.

Event coordinator and associate professor Dr. Micheal Davis says children will get to see “habitats that have been recently burned and will learn about important wildlife that benefits from fire.”  There will be a small demonstration of prescribed fire on-site, weather permitting.

Participants should wear fire resistant clothes and closed-toed shoes (no polyester track pants; no sandals; jeans are acceptable). Contact Davis with questions at mike.davisFREEMississippi.  The registration form is available at https://www.usm.edu/sites/default/files/groups/department-biological-sciences/pdf/fire_in_the_forest_application.pdf.
