International Programs Offers Geography Study Abroad in Costa Rica

Students at The University of Southern Mississippi now have an opportunity to study geography abroad in Costa Rica in 2015.
Dr. David Harms Holt, associate professor of geography at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach, will lead up to 24 students on a 17-day study abroad trip based at the Instituto Monteverde in Monteverde, Costa Rica May 9 – 25, 2015.
During this trip, students will learn how to see the country through the eyes of a scientist; students will study physical geography, biogeography, sustainable development and human geography.
Students also will tour active volcanoes, visit volcanic hot springs, rainforests, cloud forests, mangroves, tropical seasonal forests. They will also have an opportunity to experience spelunking and snorkeling.
“Costa Rica is at the forefront of environmental education and the opportunity to study in Costa Rica is an experience that you will not easily forget,” said Holt. “I have visited the country twice and am impressed by the rich culture and wide range of biomes.”
To qualify for the program, students must be in good academic standing and must have completed at least 28 semester hours with an overall 2.0 GPA for undergraduates and graduate standing for graduate students. Those participating in the Costa Rica study abroad program will earn four credit hours in geography coursework.
All transportation including airfare, tuition, room and board, required health insurance, activities, tours and entrance fees are included in the cost of the program. The Costa Rica Geography Program qualifies for financial aid in the form of guaranteed student loans, Pell Grants or applicable graduate assistantships. The online application form and deposit fee will be accepted until February 2, 2015.
