Bishop served on the Southern Miss faculty from 1964 to 1990, teaching courses in advertising, journalism, photography and public relations. In addition to teaching, he was director of the university's Newspaper Production Office and advisor to the advertising staff of The Student Printz.

Before joining the university, Bishop worked for more than 30 years in the newspaper industry, mostly as an advertising manager for newspapers in Tennessee and Mississippi. He also served his country as a pilot in the Army Air Corp during WWII.

Bishop earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi and a master's degree from Southern Miss. He was inducted into the Southern Miss School of Mass Communication and Journalism Hall of Fame in 2007.
