Southern Miss to Commemorate D-Day Anniversary

As Americans commemorate the 70th anniversary of World War II”s D-Day military operation, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Department of History at The University of Southern Mississippi will host a special event June 5 at 5 p.m. in room 108 of the Liberal Arts Building to recognize the occasion.
“We Will Never Forget” is France's campaign to honor the Allied Forces who stormed the country's beaches at Normandy June 6, 1944. The military operation was important in the liberation of France and a turning point in the war against the Axis powers, which included Germany, Italy and Japan.
During this event, foreign languages instructor Keltoum Rowland, Honorary Consul of France for Mississippi; Dr. Andrew Wiest, Distinguished Professor of History at Southern Miss; and Lt. Col. Joseph Worley from the Southern Miss Army ROTC's Golden Eagle Battalion will speak, sharing the stories of veterans from D-Day. The public is welcome to attend and refreshments will be served.
“As the world pauses to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the message from
the people of France is simple: ‘The French will never forget,'” said Rowland.
Similar ceremonies are happening across the U.S., and the sentiment from the French
people is the same in that they recognize the courage and sacrifices of the Allied
Forces, led by U.S. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.
