A total of 17 teams from throughout the U.S., and as far as Japan and Australia, will travel to the Mississippi Gulf Coast August 6 – 8 to compete in the 2015 Wheelchair Softball World Series at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in Biloxi. The event is hosted by the Institute for Disability Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi in partnership with the Metro Area Community Empowerment and the National Wheelchair Softball Association.
With hundreds of athletes visiting the Mississippi Gulf Coast, volunteers are needed to assist with events. These include daily set-up and removal of equipment, score keeping, keeping athletes hydrated, assisting with field assignments, and helping teams move between playing fields. “We couldn't be more excited to announce that talented athletes from around the U.S. and the world have committed to competing in this amazing event,” said Dr. Beth Bryant-Claxton, executive director of the Institute for Disability Studies. “We happily welcome them to enjoy the hospitality and resources our great state has to offer. We know our community will come together to cheer on and support these athletes as they vie to be named the 2015 Wheelchair Softball World Series Champion.”
The Institute for Disability Studies serves as Mississippi's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Research, Education and Service. The Institute's facility on the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus in Long Beach serves children and adults with disabilities through assistive technology, evaluation, consultation and recreation.
