Secretary of State Hosemann To Discuss Nonprofits At Southern Miss

The University of Southern Mississippi will welcome Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann on Monday March 16, when he will present, “Regulating Charitable Organizations and Nonprofits in Mississippi.” The discussion, free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, No. 108.

The Department of Anthropology and Sociology and the Nonprofit Studies Program at Southern Miss are hosting Hosemann to inform the community about nonprofit regulation, an area that may be less well known or understood, according to Dr. Ann Marie Kinnell, chair of the department and director of the nonprofit studies program.

The Secretary of State's office is the first point of contact for charitable organizations in Mississippi. Because of this, Dr. Kinnell decided that Hosemann represents the optimal candidate for such a topic.

“I regularly have speakers come in for my Nonprofit Management class and one of the topics that we cover is nonprofit regulation and accountability. Who better to address this issue than the Secretary of State?” said Dr. Kinnell.

Kinnell hopes the audience will gain a better understanding of what the Secretary of State's office does, what the nonprofit regulations are, and how it relates to each nonprofit.

“Most people do not have the chance to directly ask the Secretary of State questions, so this is the opportunity to do so,” said Kinnell.
