Southern Miss Faculty Member Named Outstanding College Science Teacher

The Mississippi Science Teacher's Association has named Dr. Sherry Herron, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Director of the Center for Science and Mathematics Education at The University of Southern Mississippi, Outstanding College Science Teacher for 2015.

“While being an educator for nearly 40 years, this award validates my work. It makes me feel very rewarded for my lifelong efforts,” said Herron.

Herron received her award at the Mississippi Science Teacher's Association Conference Oct. 25-27 in downtown Jackson. The theme of the conference was “Science Teachers Shape the Future.” Herron's advice to those who would like to get in the line of work as her: “the students need you, a principal or dean can make or break a school, if its bad enough change schools, but the students count on you.”

Herron reminds her students to always “give it a shot, don't let obstacles stand in your way, go around them.”

She was nominated for the award by her peers and students.
