Southern Miss to Host Special Event Friday for Merchandising Students

The University of Southern Mississippi Merchandising Program will host the Cotton Coterie and Up-Cycling Design Competition on Friday, Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Scianna Hall on the Hattiesburg campus. More than 120 merchandising students across state of Mississippi will participate in the event.

The Coterie is designed to create awareness of Mississippi cotton and its sustainability as well as promoting networking and interaction among the merchandising programs in Mississippi schools and colleges.

The event features seminar discussions and an up-cycling design competition. Seminar discussion topics include relevant topics related to apparel and textile-related careers, including apparel related entrepreneurship, career preparation, and textiles and economic development.

The up-cycling design competition is open to merchandising students from various Mississippi universities, colleges and high schools. Entrants can choose to upcycle t-shirt based or denim based apparel, accessories or home furnishing products.  Recognition and awards totaling $1,800 will be made to the winners from various categories.

The event is made possible by a grant from the Importer Support Program of the Cotton Board and Cotton Incorporated., and is a joint partnership between the three Mississippi universities which offer fashion merchandising programs: The University of Southern Mississippi, Delta State University, and Mississippi State University.
