Southern Miss Office of Student Activities Recognizes Outstanding Student Organizations, Student Leaders

The Office of Student Activities at The University of Southern Mississippi recently recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of its 192 student organizations at the Student Organization Awards and Recognition ceremony. More than 120 nominations were collected, and a student affairs review committee determined the winners.

Student Activities presented the following awards for the 2014-2015 school year:

Outstanding New Student Organization: Alpha Chi Omega

Given annually, this award recognizes a new student organization that has made exceptional contributions to its members and the greater Southern Miss community in its first year of registration.  

Rising Star Student Organization: Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society

The Rising Star Award recognizes a re-chartered or newer student organization that has made exceptional contributions to its members and Southern Miss community in its short time of existence.

Emerging Leader Award: Caroline S. Bradley, Eagle Connection and Chi Omega

Bradley is an Honors College student and an English major with a 4.0 GPA from Lucedale. The Emerging Leader award is given to a freshmen, sophomore, or transfer student who has demonstrated knowledge, enthusiasm, and motivation for campus and community involvement and leadership at Southern Miss.

Faculty/Staff Community Builder: Dr. Steve Cloud

Dr. Cloud is a professor and chair of the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences. The Community Builder award honors a faculty or staff member who has shown commitment and support toward developing a culturally diverse, compassionate, and educated university community reflective of inclusive excellence.

Student Community Builder: Elena Lofton, College Panhellenic Council and Student Government Association

Lofton is an Honors College student and a Spanish major from Mt. Vernon, Ala. The Community Builder award honors a student who has shown commitment and support toward developing a culturally diverse, compassionate, and educated university community reflective of inclusive excellence.

Outstanding Student Organization Advisor: Dr. Kimberly Ward

Dr. Ward is an assistant professor and Audiology Clinic director in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences. She serves as advisor to Delta Gamma and the Student Academy of Audiologists.

Outstanding Student Organization Member: Rhea Valentine, Chi Omega

Valentine is a therapeutic recreation major from Hattiesburg. The Outstanding Student Organization Member award is presented to a student who shows exceptional commitment to academic achievement, community service, campus involvement and leadership.

Outstanding Student Organization Officer: Kristi Fleetwood, Honors College Ambassadors

Fleetwood is an Honors College student from Pelham, Ala. The Outstanding Student Organization Officer awards a student organization leader that shows exceptional commitment to academic achievement, community service, campus involvement and leadership.

Outstanding Student Organization President: Gavin Snyder, Southern Miss Activities Council

Snyder is a communication studies major from Mobile, Ala. The Outstanding Student Organization President honors a president who shows exceptional commitment to academic achievement, community service, campus involvement and leadership.

Outstanding Student Organization of the Year: Vietnamese Student Association

The Student Organization of the Year recognizes the student organization that has gone above and beyond in the past year to make exceptional contributions to their members, the student of Southern Miss, and the greater Southern Miss community.

Student Activities Hall of Fame Inductee: April Lammons

Lammons is the administrative assistant for the Department of Union and Programs. The Student Activities Hall of Fame was founded in 2001 and recognizes an individual who has had a direct impact on the success of student organizations.
