The School of Kinesiology at The University of Southern Mississippi saw homecoming as an opportunity to share the social and physical benefits of activity with its campus community.

To kick off the day's festivities the Athletic Training Club and School hosted the 20th annual Homecoming 5K at Pride Field. More than 100 students, faculty, alumni and community members raced around the Hattiesburg campus.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to every sponsor, school affiliate, student, and community member for showing your support on Saturday,” said Alex Pfefferle, senior athletic training major and president of the Athletic Training Club. “This race was a huge success for our club, and we are excited to have the support and involvement of our community to further our academic endeavors in the spring.”

Physical education and therapeutic recreation majors planned and facilitated lawn games for the College of Health's Porch Party. The party was an opportunity for alumni, faculty, staff students and friends of the College to stop by the porch of Fritzsche-Gibbs Hall to enjoy healthy tailgating snacks and outdoor activities.

“As a club we want to help out in any way possible with College of Health events,” said James Fox, a physical education student and president of the Physical Education Majors Club. “The Porch Party was a great opportunity to put into practice what we learn every day in our classes. We want to promote a healthy lifestyle and the interaction with the kids allowed us to do so.”

“Our school desires to improve the health of our community and state,” said Dr. Scott Piland, professor and director of the School of Kinesiology. “We hope these events helped spread the message of the importance of regular physical activity and how seamlessly it can be integrated into daily life.”
