Moving business programs forward on the Mississippi Gulf Coast served as the theme for the day as The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus College of Business held its first Business Advisory Board meeting last month in Long Beach.

The meeting was a combined gathering of more than 40 Gulf Coast business leaders, College of Business students, administration, faculty and staff.

“The advisory board for business programs at the Gulf Park Campus is off to a wonderful start,” said Dr. Faye Gilbert, Dean of the College of Business. “The discussions we held with faculty, students and board members will form our action initiatives and methods for connecting with students with opportunities on the Gulf Coast this year.”

Gilbert provided information about the business programs on the Gulf Park campus and challenged members of the board to get involved with classes and with students to provide real world learning opportunities. She then thanked them for being in partnership with the University and the College of Business.

The event was made possible by a gift from retired coast banker and businessman Joseph F. Boardman. “We so appreciate the support of Joe Boardman and his support of the College of Business and its activities,” noted Gilbert.

The board will meet several times a year to work with the college to improve business programs, expand student opportunities, and create new avenues of support on the Gulf Park Campus.

Members of the Advisory Board in attendance included: John McFarland from Red Cross; Roland Weeks, retired from Sun Herald; John Atherton Mississippi Power; Linda Watts, Mississippi Power, retired; Mark Cumbest, Cumbest Realty; Rosa Obregon, Stennis Space Center; Billy Hewes, Hewes Nationwide Insurance; Frank WIllem Triton, Lindsey Inman, Island View Casino; Rick Williams, WLOX; Merrin Mueller, RPM Pizza.
