National Intercollegiate Athletics Safety and Security Summit Jan. 24-26

The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) will hold the 4th annual National Intercollegiate Athletics Safety and Security Summit Jan. 24-26 at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. More than 40 universities from across the country will be in attendance for this important event.

“The goal of the National Intercollegiate Athletics Safety and Security Summit is to develop strategies to enhance and implement best practices by addressing major safety and security issues through input from the country's best professionals in the field of intercollegiate athletics,” said Dr. Lou Marciani, director of NCS4.

The summit serves as the only annual combined meeting for personnel responsible for safety and security management at collegiate sports events at NCAA Division I, II and III institutions, as well as athletic conferences and college football bowls.

Invitees include representatives from athletic departments and athletic conferences, as well as bowl administrators and staff, campus law enforcement, first responders, and security companies responsible for providing contract services.

Summit highlights include keynote speakers and panel discussions covering topics such as game day operations, homegrown violent extremist threats, as well as the perspective from university administration regarding university administration and the intersection of safety and security best practices.

“College athletics are a big part of a university's traditions, and because so many of our alumni, friends and family attend these large sporting events, maintaining a safe and secure environment for everyone is part of our job,” said Dr. F. King Alexander, president of Louisiana State University and a scheduled keynote speaker for the summit.  “As the challenges facing our society continue to evolve, so too do the security methods we must employ.”

Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in moderated discussions (round robin) on the the following topics:

• Event Day Planning
• Crowd Dynamics/Management
• Emergency Action Planning
• Risk and Threat Assessment
• Staff Development and Performance
• Technology Use/Information Management

The University of Kentucky's Chief of Police, Joe Monroe, participates in the Summit every year, finding the event both rewarding and informative.

“Those attending the Intercollegiate Summit will have the opportunity to share and network with their peers as well as leave with information that will help them with providing a more secure environment for their spectators at their respective venues,” said Monroe.
