Recreational Sports Celebrates Additions of Climbing Wall, Outdoor Fitness Stations

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Recreational Sports will hold a dual ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new climbing wall and outdoor exercise fitness stations located at the Payne Center at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27 inside the Payne Center Atrium.
The ceremony will include remarks from University officials, a Health is Golden grant representative and Student Government Association President Caroline Bradley. Refreshments will be served following the ribbon cuttings. Both the climbing wall and outdoor fitness stations will be available for guests to use following the ceremony.
The climbing wall, an Entre Prises imprint wall, stands 30-feet high by 40-feet wide and provides nine routes for individuals to enjoy that range from beginner to intermediate and more advanced. The Recreational Sports Department has rock-climbing shoes and helmets available for individuals climbing the wall.
The climbing wall will be open during special operating hours and staffed by certified Recreational Sports employees. University and community groups can rent the wall for team-building and recreational activities.
The decision to add a climbing wall to the Payne Center facility came after reviewing student feedback and in the spirit of keeping our facility competitive with other universities in the region.
In addition to the climbing wall, outdoor fitness stations have been installed along the Bruce and Virginia Wilgus Fitness and Wellness Trail, which is located in front of the Payne Center. The seven individual stations are scattered around the trail and give users nine exercises for both the upper and lower body that can be completed without any additional equipment.
Each station features a sign with instructions and a QR code linking to a video showing how to properly perform each station's exercise. The fitness stations are open to all students and members of the community.
