OLLI to Host Bicentennial by the Beach Every Thursday in June

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at The University of Southern Mississippi will host Bicentennial by the Beach on the University's Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, beginning today, June 8.

Every Thursday during the month of June, Bicentennial on the Beach will offer special programming that celebrates Mississippi's history and influence, presented by local guest speakers. Programming will be held at 6 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center Room 201 on the Gulf Park campus. Events are free and open to the public.

Programming schedule is as follows:  

June 8:  Vanda McCormick on art and art history along the Gulf Coast

June 15: Boyce Upholt presents tales from the Mississippi River, fresh from a six-week canoe trip down the muddy waters from St. Louis to New Orleans, sharing a paddler's eye view.

June 22: Katrina Byrd takes a tour of the history of the written word in Mississippi with special attention given to the nearly lost art form of letter writing.

June 29: Charles Weeks explores the interactions and negotiations between the Chocktaw Chief Franchimastabe and the Spanish Governor Gayoso in the 18th century.
