Loretta Williams, a student in the Master of Professional Accounting program at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been awarded a Newton D. Becker Scholarship.

The scholarship program focuses on Newt Becker's vision of helping students and accounting professionals fulfill their dreams of earning the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential by offering deserving individuals assistance to prepare for the CPA exam. The scholarship criteria are based on traits important to Becker -- high moral character, strong leadership qualities and commitment to community service.

Williams, a Jackson, Miss., native, aspires to become a CPA, with plans to ultimately secure work as a forensic accountant.

“Receiving the Becker Scholarship has relieved some of the financial burden and has equipped me with the necessary resources required to accomplish my goals, as well as, create future opportunities”, says Williams.

Amber Hatten, Director of the MPA program noted: “The 2017 Newton D. Becker scholarship program includes a competitive selection process, with only 40 full-course awards granted this year. We are very proud of Lorretta for this significant accomplishment and know that she will do an excellent job using the resources provided by the scholarship award to effectively prepare for successful completion of the CPA Exam.”
