Southern Miss Fall 2017 Philosophical Fridays Begins Sept. 15

Philosophical Fridays returns this fall at The University of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg campus, beginning Sept. 15. Dr. Paul Waldau will present “'Are We Still of Any Use?' The Emerged Field of Religion and Animals.” Waldau is the director and lead faculty member for the anthrozoology program at Canisius College. The lecture will be held in the International Center, room 101.

Since 2012, Philosophical Fridays has featured diverse scholars sharing their views and knowledge of philosophy and religion. The series, hosted by the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Southern Miss, is made possible with generous assistance from the Fairchild Lecture Funds. 

The series continues on Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. when Dr. Allan Hillman presents “The Best of All Possible Worlds.” Hillman is an associate professor at the University of South Alabama whose research interests include early modern philosophy, metaphysics and the history of philosophy. The lecture will be held in the Liberal Arts Building, room 108.

Philosophical Fridays concludes on Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. when Dr. Robert Stufflebeam presents “Turing Machines, Robots, and Androids: On Making Real Artificial People.” Stufflebeam is an associate professor at the University of New Orleans where he is also head of the philosophy program. His main areas of research are philosophy of the mind, cognitive science, philosophy of science and logic.  The lecture will be held in the International Center, room 101.
