Destiney Morgan, a student in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been awarded the Eileen S. & Earl C. Whittemore Jr. Scholarship. The $2,500 award is administered through the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce and the Mississippi Nurse's Foundation.

The award was established in December 2008 to provide annual scholarships in the field of health care with the emphasis on, but not limited solely to, nursing education, including holistic medicine and the mind, body and spirit.

Morgan, a native of Gulfport, Miss., is pursuing her Advanced Practice Degree through online courses. She currently works as a Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Merit Health Wesley in Hattiesburg.

“I am so honored to receive this award, and so thankful to the Whittemores, the Gulf Coast Community Foundation and the Mississippi Nurse's Foundation,” said Morgan. “I am blessed to be able to use this scholarship toward obtaining my Advanced Practice Degree, so that I may impact patients' health care journeys with a graduate education and wider scope of practice.”

Morgan and her husband, Thatcher, are the parents of a 5-year-old daughter, Aybri Layne Morgan.
