University of Mississippi Blues Curator, Greg Johnson, will deliver a multimedia presentation on the history of music in Mississippi in the final event in the series, “Lectures, Lore and Lessons: Mississippi at the Bicentennial,” Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Blu Jazz Café in downtown Hattiesburg. The series is presented by Special Collections at The University of Southern Mississippi.

“200 Years of Mississippi Music” will celebrate the Magnolia State's diverse musical heritage, discuss the array of musical offerings across our state and look at their historical roots.

A graduate of the Southern Miss School of Music in 2000, and its School of Library and Information Science in 2002, Johnson has served as Blues Curator and Associate Professor in Archives and Special Collections at the University of Mississippi since 2002. He is the co-author of 100 Books Every Blues Fan Should Own (Roman & Littlefield, 2014) and was the consulting editor for the Encyclopedia of the Blues (Routledge, 2006). As a multi-instrumentalist, he regularly performs in multiple genres from traditional Irish and Americana folk to jazz and classical.

“Lectures, Lore and Lessons: Mississippi at the Bicentennial” aims to present a multifaceted view of Mississippi's first 200 years. This official bicentennial project was made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council, through support from the Mississippi Development Authority.
