USM to Host High School Students in Celebration of Mole Day

More than 100 high school students from the Pine Belt area will congregate on The University of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg campus Monday, Oct. 23 in celebration of Mole Day – a day devoted to the wonders of chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at USM is sponsoring the event, which will feature skits, demonstrations and other activities. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. in the Walker Science Building.
“This is an important day in chemistry celebrated across the country and the world. We wanted to make this a recruiting event for our department and the University,” said Dr. Vijay Rangachari, associate professor and interim chair of the department.
Celebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m., Mole Day commemorates Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 1023), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Mole Day was created as a way to foster interest in chemistry. Schools throughout the United States and around the world celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles.
