USM Office of Technology Development Hosts USPTO Patent and Trademark Presentation

Cancer drug delivery, solar cell innovation, and developing a better helmet for U.S. Army soldiers — University of Southern Mississippi faculty and students are ambitious and innovative in their current research. Those projects promise to change, and in some cases, save lives. And the value of discoveries can be measured in numerous ways, including monetary.

On Thursday, the University hosted an official with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to better inform the academic community on the role of that office protecting the intellectual property that emerges from USM research.

Vladimir Magloire, USPTO supervisory patent examiner, led a discussion about what all inventors, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and start-ups should know about intellectual property.

The presentation was hosted by the Office of Technology Development, which supports technology transfer managing intellectual property. The office is responsible for the protection and commercialization of USM's research innovations. The University currently holds nearly 50 patents available for licensing.

“Faculty, staff and student understanding of the value of their innovations, and how to protect their intellectual property, is critical to our on-going efforts with technology transfer and entrepreneurship,” said Chase Kasper Assistant Vice President for Research, Technology Transfer and Corporate Relations. “The presentation offered an opportunity to hear directly from a United States Patent and Trademark Office official on how best to work with the USPTO to protect their work.”
