News Conference Today

What: Announcement of $19 millin grant renewal

When: 10 a.m. today, Sept. 14, 2018

Where: USM's Chain Technology Building, Room 102, Hattiesburg campus

Specifics: The University of Southern Mississippi will announce the renewal of a $19 million grant to support the Mississippi INBRE program. Housed at USM, the INBRE program is a statewide initiative supported by an award from the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences. The recent renewal of the $19 million grant for the next five years will allow Mississippi researchers and students to continue to enhance biomedical research in the state and will allow Mississippi INBRE to provide opportunities for the increase in number of competitive researchers and students within the state.

Note: Media will have an opportunity to collect still images and video from one of the INBRE-related labs following the news conference.

Anestis: National Suicide Prevention Month Opportunity to Educate Public, Re-Examine Firearms Safety, Policy Proposals

Designating September as National Suicide Prevention Month is an opportunity to call attention to and examine responses that one University of Southern Mississippi faculty says many Americans agree should be considered to address the problem.

Dr. Michael Anestis, a Southern Miss associate professor of psychology, said that since 1999, the U.S. suicide rate has risen more than 30 percent, and, since 2005, the rate has risen each year.
