Nichols Named Director of the School of Education at Southern Miss

Dr. Sandra Nichols has been named the director of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM)'s new School of Education.

Nichols, a native of Ellisville, will oversee one of the largest academic schools at the university with almost 1,000 students enrolled in three undergraduate degree and 13 graduate degree programs. Her role began July 1.

NIH Internship Helps Psychology Student Gain Research Skills, Career Insights

A nationally competitive internship facilitated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is giving a University of Southern Mississippi (USM) undergraduate valuable research experiences she can leverage in graduate school and her career. Latisha Swygert, a University of Southern Mississippi (USM) senior psychology major from Clinton, Miss. and student in its prestigious Honors College, earned a spot in the NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) 2018 Summer Research Internship Program.

Dr. Cindy Blackwell, visiting associate professor of Mass Communication, is available to discuss some tips and strategies for secondary and higher education teachers as they embark on a new academic year. The Marine Education Center at USM's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory is hosting a series of camps for students this summer. The popular Sharkheads Shark Fest camp (for grades 7-12) continues through Friday. Campers are spending this week learning all about one of the ocean's apex predators. Shark Fest participants may encounter Atlantic sharp nose, bonnethead, blacktip, spinner, hammerhead and bull sharks. To schedule coverage, contact James Skrmetta at 228.872.4254.
