Career Fair Becomes Career Expo to Better Serve All USM Students

The Office of Career Services at The University of Southern Mississippi seeks to draw more attention and engagement from freshmen and sophomore students with its inaugural Career Expo set for Oct. 9 on the Hattiesburg campus. Formerly designated as a career fair, the re-branded Career Expo will be held from Noon-4 p.m. at the Thad Cochran Center.

Paige Jones, marketing specialist with Career Services, notes that the name change was designed to ensure that all students understood the significance of the event.

“The name Career Fair gave off the impression that it was an event solely for graduating seniors who were ready to start their careers, and that's far from what it is,” said Jones. “We wanted to let students know that this is an opportunity for students in all classifications and all majors. The Career Expo gives students the opportunity to discover careers in their major, seek out job shadowing and internships, practice speaking skills, or even land an entry level job/interview.”

More than 80 employers from across the nation are expected to be represented at the expo. Students in all classifications and all majors, as well as USM alumni, are encouraged to attend.

Students are reminded to dress professionally and to bring multiple copies of their résumés for potential employers to consider.
