DuBard School to Host 22nd Annual Dyslexia Symposium

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi is hosting the 22nd Annual DuBard Symposium: “Dyslexia and Related Disorders” on Sept. 13-14, 2018 at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.
This two-day educational and networking event will feature nationally-recognized speakers and a collection of sessions on dyslexia and topics related to the written language disorder. Keynote sessions will kick off the event each day, followed by 12 breakout sessions in which participants can choose the programs most fitted to their needs.
Keynote speakers are Jan Cook, M. Ed.; and Charles Haynes, Ed.D., CCC-SLP. Cook is currently the Dyslexia Specialist for the Region 4 Education Service Center (ESC) located in Houston, Texas. The center provides guidance and staff development for 49 school districts and 39 charter schools. In addition to providing numerous professional development opportunities and leadership network meetings for the region, Cook creates educational materials.
She co-authored Written Composition in Motion, a companion guide to Pathways to Reading Comprehension, which is used to determine instruction and intervention targets when working with struggling students.
Haynes helped to pioneer language-based curricula for children with dyslexia and expressive language impairments. A Professor and Clinical Supervisor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston, he has longstanding interests in practical strategies for diagnosing and treating language and learning difficulties.
His most recent publication, "From Talking to Writing: Strategies for Scaffolding Narrative and Expository Expression, Second Edition", was published by Landmark Outreach Publications this year (2018).
Session topics will include: Engaging dyslexic readers, understanding dysgraphia, auditory processing disorder and dyslexia, dyslexia simulation, predicting and identifying dyslexia, update on diagnosis and treatment of ADHD and more.
The DuBard Symposium is recommended for general and special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, dyslexia therapists, health care professionals, school psychologists, school administrators, counselors, parents, students and anyone interested in learning more about dyslexia and related disorders.
The symposium is hosted by the DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi. An early-bird discounted registration of only $115 for professionals and $75 for students is available until August 30; standard registrations, $135 and $95, will continue to be available through September 5. ASHA, ALTA, SEMI and educator continuing education units are available.
