The University of Southern Mississippi's College of Business and Economic Development, in conjunction with the University's National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security (NCS4), recently created a video highlighting opportunities for the defense industry in sport security.

The video was developed through the Mississippi Defense Diversification Initiative funded by the Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment. It was unveiled during the 2018 National Sports Safety and Security Conference & Exhibition held earlier this month in Louisville, KY.

NCS4 Director Dr. Lou Marciani explains that the Mississippi Defense Diversification Initiative was designed to assist defense contractor to diversify into non-military markets to make defense supply chains more sustainable.

“Since technology developed to meet the needs of the Department of Defense can often be directly applied to the needs of sport and event security, this video was developed to increase awareness of the opportunities providing safety and security for commercial sports and entertainment facilities,” said Marciani.

Domoto Brands LLC produced the video which targets defense contractors with dual use technology as well as emergency managers, fire services, event management and law enforcement.

Marciani adds that the video unveiling at the 2018 national conference was met with overwhelming acceptance. “It was a great success. It showed the audience with how NCS4 addresses issues related to risk/threats, counter terrorism, security management and emergency management,” he said. “I think it made the security directors realize that there are many military applications that apply to their environment.”

As Marciani notes, security for spots and entertainment events is a multi-billion-dollar industry, with significant growth potential due to the increasing popularity of mega-sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, Olympic Games and the Super Bowl.
