USM Gulf Park Announces New Cultural Arts Series

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Park campus proudly announces a new Cultural Arts Series. The series begins on Monday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. with an inaugural cello and piano concert by Dr. Alexander Russakovsky, USM professor of music, and Yumi Nomoto, collaborative pianist.
The event will be held in the Fleming Education Center Auditorium on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
“The new Cultural Arts Series seeks to bring a variety of artistic performances, as well as dialogue surrounding those performances, to the University's Gulf Park Campus,” said Dr. Al Eicklemann, USM Gulf Park Cultural Arts Series committee chair. “We are very much looking forward to hosting Dr. Russakovsky and Ms. Nomoto for what will be a phenomenal concert, and we hope the public will join us for our first event.”
Dr. Russakovsky studied cello at the Leningrad Conservatory, under renowned Russian professors, Emmanuel Fishman and Anatoli Nikitin. He earned his Bachelor of Music at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy and his Master's degree at Yale University where he studied under Aldo Parisot. He holds a doctorate in cello performance from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Most recently, Dr. Russakovsky has given master classes and recitals in Taiwan, Israel and Latin America. He is currently professor of cello at USM.
Ms. Nomoto has performed at major venues throughout Europe and the U.S., including Wigmore Hall, Southbank Centre and St. John's Smith Square in London; Salle Cortot in Paris; and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She was a piano fellow at the Bard College Conservatory of Music, and currently serves as staff pianist at USM.
A question-and-answer session and refreshments will follow the program. The event is free and open to the public.
Future Cultural Arts Series events will be held in Spring 2019. The series is projected to feature three public-oriented events including: a pop-up art exhibition, an English Renaissance theatre performance, and a forum featuring women in leadership. All events will be held on Monday evenings.
