USM, MGCCC Officials to Announce New Education Pathway Program
The University will hold a news conference today at 11 a.m. in the President's Conference Room of the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building on the Hattiesburg campus to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding to recognize a new, innovative teacher education pathway program offered through an official partnership between Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) and The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. is among Mississippi education leaders expected to attend the signing of a memorandum of understanding for “Teacher's College,” a new, innovative teacher education pathway program established between MGCCC and USM.

University Libraries hosting Edible Book Festival April 1 on Hattiesburg Campus
University Libraries at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and the USM Food Research Group will host the 5th annual Edible Book Festival in the Cook Library Learning Commons Gallery Monday, April 1 on the Hattiesburg campus, beginning at 10 a.m.
Edible books are made of food and inspired by literary titles, characters, or authors, with creative examples such as cupcakes used to create Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar, or baked cookies shaped like books. Organizers of this event are accepting submissions from USM students, staff, faculty and Hattiesburg area residents for competition in the categories of Best in Show, Most Nutritious, and Most Creative.
Second Social Work Grad Student Earns Prestigious National Fellowship
When University of Southern Mississippi graduate student Sidney Smith learned he had won a national social work fellowship, the first thing he did was call the one person who would best understand what he was feeling.
When Smith was assembling an application last fall for the Council on Social Work Education's Minority Fellowship Program for master's students, he leaned on Southern Miss alumna Evelyn Sullivan, who a year earlier became the first Mississippian to be named a fellow in the program's four years.
