Alternative Spring Break for Youth and Young Adults Scheduled for March 11-15

The Alternative Spring Break training event for youth and young adults is set for March 11-15 at USM.

The University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies will hold a week-long Alternative Spring Break training event for youth and young adults with disabilities on March 11-15, on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus.

The training sessions will be held daily from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. daily, with lunch provided. The Alternative Spring Break is provided by the ToTAL project, a work-based training and internship program for teens and young adults with disabilities ages 14 to 21. This event will serve 20 participants.

“The ToTAL Alternative Spring Break will provide high school students with disabilities the opportunity to gain work skills for future employment,” said Dr. Jerry R. Alliston, associate director at the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS). “The primary focus of the event is on assisting these future leaders in finding their voice, being involved in their communities and getting ready for work.”

Alternative Spring Break participants will explore college options, examine work opportunities, set personal goals learn about becoming a self-advocate and develop a personal electronic portfolio.
