Annual Big Event Project Sees Large USM Student Turnout

Approximately 550 University of Southern Mississippi students embraced the spirit of volunteerism last Saturday (Feb. 23) as participants in the annual Big Event community service program.
Students, from the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses worked at 27 different sites in the Hattiesburg area and along the Gulf Coast. About 60 different student organizations signed up to participate.
“We were thrilled to have such a good turnout for the event. Students had a great time, worked hard, and saw first-hand what it means to be part of a community,” said Christy Arrazattee, director of USM's Center for Community Engagement.
This marked the ninth year USM has engaged in the program that involves students at other colleges and universities across the country. The USM initiative is supported by the USM Student Government Association, with assistance from the University's Center for Community Engagement.
