The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Park Cultural Arts Series will begin its 2019-20 programming with “Water Ways: Ebbs and Flows of Mississippi History” on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. in Hardy Hall Ballroom on the USM Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The lecture "Water Ways: Ebbs and Flows of Mississippi History," will be presented by Dr. James C. Giesen, associate professor in the Department of History at Mississippi State University.

Giesen’s talk will focus on the impacts of water ways on Mississippi history by examining three case studies: the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927; subsequent flood modeling and flood mitigation solutions developed and implemented by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and the intersection of racial justice concerns and the historical usage of Mississippi's coastal waterways and beaches.

Admission is free, and members of the University community and general public are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. This program is supported by the Mississippi Humanities Council.

For more information about the series, contact Dr. Allan Eickelmann, Cultural Arts Series committee chair and associate teaching professor, at allan.eickelmannFREEMississippi.
