William "SKip" Scaggs

Longtime economic development professional William “Skip” Scaggs will be the featured guest as part of the International Business Speaker Series on Thursday, April 4 at The University of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg campus. Scaggs' address is set for 11 a.m. in Scianna Hall's McDonnell Auditorium.

A native of Meridian, Miss., Scaggs current serves as Executive Director of the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association, a regional economic development organization covering 30 counties in Northeast Mississippi.

The theme of Scaggs' lecture is “Exporting and Evolving Nature of Economic Development.” Dr. John Lambert, Associate Professor, School of Management at USM says the presentation will offer an opportunity for local businesses to become aware of the tremendous economic impact of accessing global markets.

“When they export, businesses not only have additional sources of revenue, they also create jobs, and expand productivity,” said Lambert. “When businesses are engaged in multiple global markets, they are less susceptible to the hazards of economic downturns in any one of them.”
