Psychology Faculty Members Receive Summer Grant for Improvement of Instruction

Two assistant professors in The University of Southern Mississippi's (USM) School of Psychology have each received a Summer Grant for the Improvement of Instruction (SGII) for 2019 from the Office of the Provost. The grant includes a summer salary stipend and provides time for recipients to redesign or create new courses and/or assessment practices.
*Dr. Mark Huff plans to design and implement a series of active learning activities to accompany lessons from his research methods course, noting that research in the fields of education and cognitive psychology overwhelmingly support the benefits of interactive learning activities at improving student retention of course materials. These activities will include opportunities for his students to first participate as a human subject, then analyze and describe the data collected.
“Students will be exposed to and apply different types of research methodologies, and get hands-on experience in data analytics,” Dr. Huff said.
*Dr. Aaron Fath said the SGII he received will support a project focused on development of a master course with standardized materials, utilizing active learning techniques for use by all PSY 360 (Behavioral Statistics) instructors in the School of Psychology.
“This will improve instruction, ensure consistency across all sections of the course, and provide support for graduate instructors and the Statistics Tutoring Center that is operated by the School of Psychology," Dr. Fath said.
