Southern Arena Theatre 43rd Season Abounds in June 2019

The Southern Arena Theatre is gearing up for its 43rd season at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) with two events based on Shakespearean plays: I Hate Hamlet and Speak the Speech! in June.

I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick takes place in John Barrymore's old apartment in New York City, where television actor Andrew Rally struggles to take on the role of Hamlet.  Rally enlists Barrymore's ghost, who encourages him, and challenges him to take the stage.

“[It is an] unapologetically silly and at times hilarious tale of how Rally rises above his fear and loathing of the role people ritualistically refer to as ‘the greatest in the English-speaking world,'” stated the New York Times in a review.

I Hate Hamlet will run with many dates in conjunction with FestivalSouth,  June 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 at 7:30 p.m. and June 16, 23, 30 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 seniors and military, and $8 for students.

Join the SAT Company in reading scenes from Hamlet and other great Shakespeare plays on June 20 and 27 at 7:30 pm.  These informal readings, to quote Hamlet, Speak the Speech! This event is free for all, and has coffee, tea, and cookies provided, while supplies last.

SAT support comes from Southern Miss, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Performing and Visual Arts, Partners for the Arts, local corporations and from individual SAT donors.
