The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Theatre presents an MFA Directing Special Project on Sept. 30 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Woods Theatre on the Hattiesburg campus. This event is free and open to the general public.

Directed by Master of Fine Arts (MFA) student Samuel Buchanan, the special project will cover two comedies by French playwright Molière: The Flying Doctor and Sganarelle, or the Imaginary Cuckold.

In Molière’s first play The Flying Doctor, the main character Sganarelle attempts to dupe a rich nobleman by posing as a doctor in order to aid a pair of young lovers. Unfortunately, hijinks ensue as Sganarelle must constantly swap between being himself and his “twin” brother.

Afterwards is Sganarelle, or The Imaginary Cuckold, a one-act play that deals with themes of jealousy and misunderstandings. When Sganarelle attempts to help an ill woman, his wife suspects infidelity. The situation worsens when Sganarelle believes his wife is unfaithful herself.

“These witty productions display an amazing group of performers who share a passion for the art form,” said Buchanan.
