The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Music presents its 2019 Cello Festival on April 11 and 12. The event is presented in part by the generous support of Partners for the Arts.

The festival will include master classes and recitals from guest artists Hilary Glen (University of Alabama) and Bion Tsang (University of Texas in Austin). The festival will also have a concert featuring the USM students.

“The Cello Festival is an event like none other in the Southern Mississippi region,” said Professor of Cello Dr. Alexander Russakovsky. “The unique event engages patrons of all ages and social backgrounds, from classical music connoisseurs to public school students.”

Hilary Glen has performed around the world at various locations such as Carnegie Hall, the Bliss Center in Belize, and even a mountainside in the Italian Alps. Glen currently is Principal Cellist of the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra and Acting Principal of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

Bion Tsang is widely considered one of the top instrumentalists in his generation, having earned various honors such as the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the MEF Career Grant. Tsang has also collaborated with Pamela Frank, Jaime Laredo, Cho-Liang Lin, and Yo-Yo Ma.

On April 11, Hilary Glen will host a master class at 3:00 p.m. and a recital at 7:30 p.m. On April 12, Bion Tsang will host a master class at 9 a.m. and a recital at 7:30 p.m. The student concert will be on April 12 at 4 p.m. All these events are free and will take place at Marsh Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.
