The exciting Midsummer Musical Theatre Experience returns for another season at The University of Southern Mississippi as youngsters from across the state put their talents on display Friday, July 19 at the Hartwig Theatre on the Hattiesburg campus.

Campers will be performing a fun-filled production of Tut, Tut! Four performances are scheduled on Friday: 10 a.m., Noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

This marks the 14th consecutive season of the one-day theatre camp under the direction of Dr. Robin Aronson, Professor of Voice and Acting in Theatre at USM. Approximately 40 students age 8-15 will be participating in the camp.

“This is really a wonderful outreach for young people and families in our community. It also gives our camp staff experience in theatre for young audiences,” said Aronson.

Aronson explained that in choosing a particular musical for the camp’s production, she always looks for a good story, something fun, with engaging music and numerous characters.

TUT, TUT! is inspired by the life of “King Tut” (the 10-year old who became King of Egypt) with a touch of Mark Twain’s “The Prince and the Pauper”. The story begins with a young Prince Tut who is bored of the royal life, so he wanders into the streets of the city looking for adventure. Suddenly he meets a peasant who looks just like him! They concoct a plan to trade places for three days. But when the King dies and Prince Tut must ascend the throne, their plan goes terribly awry.

“This is going to be a really fun show that is very family friendly,” said Aronson. “All of the staff members working on this show are highly trained. We hope everyone can find time to attend.”

Tickets are $5 at the door. For more information, contact Aronson at 601.266.6442 or robin.aronsonFREEMississippi. Information can also be found on the Midsummer Musical Theatre Experience Facebook page.
