Research presentations, laboratory tours, an evening social and special recognition of a distinguished faculty member will highlight the 2019 School of Polymer Science and Engineering Conference and Alumni Event at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM).

The 2nd annual conference will take place on Friday, April 26 at the Shelby F. Thames Polymer Science Research center on the Hattiesburg campus.

The event will include celebration of Dr. Charles L. McCormick's storied career and upcoming retirement. Many of the presentations by select speakers will focus on the four decades of work conducted by the McCormick Research Group.

“This event is particularly important because we are honoring contributions of USM's most prolific research scientist, Dr. Charles McCormick,” said Dr. Jeff Wiggins, director of USM's School of Polymer Science and Engineering. “Dr. McCormick's contributions in research and academic excellence in our School of Polymer Science and Engineering are almost impossible to quantify. It is indeed exciting and gratifying to be able to honor him in this fashion.”

Wiggins notes that the conference will also feature student posters highlighting current research, along with future plans associated with the School of Polymer Science and Engineering.

One of the more significant facets of the event is the opportunity provided to connect the School with USM alumni.

“The polymer science and engineering community is small and our alumni play a critical role for keeping Southern Miss at the forefront of global recognition and contribution in our field,” said Wiggins. “Alumni from our programs serve in leadership roles in small companies to major international conglomerates with the State of Mississippi, and around the world.”
