USM Symphonic Winds Concert Set for March 19

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Symphonic Winds presents its third performance of the 2018-2019 academic year on Tuesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium. This concert is free and open to the public.

The program opens with Henk van Lijnschooten's energetic Overture 2000, which was written in honor of the 2,000^th publication of the Molenaar publishing house.

Following the overture is a setting of David del Tredici's Acrostic Song from his larger work Final Alice. Set to the last two chapters of “Alice in Wonderland”, this music is set to the Acrostic Poem in which Lewis Carol composes a poem of which the first letter in each line spells Alice Liddell's (the real-life Alice on whom the fictional Alice character is based) name.

After that is one of the great, but often overlooked, marches in our repertoire – Grafulla's Washington Grays. Another piece being performed will be from USM's inimitable resident composer, Professor Luigi Zaninelli. The Symphonic Winds will be performing his Italian Carol, a beautiful work written in homage to the composer's mother.

Closing the program for the night is the masterwork by Gustav Holst:  The First Suite in Eb for Military Band.

“We have the greatest students in the country studying within the halls of the Southern Miss School of Music,” said Associate Director of Bands Dr. Colin McKenzie. “Combine that with some of the great repertoire available to our ensemble and you have a concert event which you will not want to miss.”
