Showcasing the best theatre, art, design, and dance, Revelry features 13 days of performances, exhibitions, guest artists, lectures, panel discussions, masterclasses, and workshops across the School of Performing and Visual Arts.

Kicking off Revelry 2020 is the Dance Gala on Feb. 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. in the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus. The Dance Gala is an evening of dance which will feature choreography and performances from guest artists, USM Dance faculty, and students in the Dance program.

“It serves to engage the audience by showcasing different styles of dance technique for the community to witness dance in and outside of USM’s Dance Program,” said Director of the School of Performing and Visual Arts Professor Stacy Reischman Fletcher.

Price of admission for the Dance Gala is $6 for students; $10 for faculty, staff, military, and seniors; and $15 for the general public.

Community Spectacular Day will be held on Feb. 15 at the 3D Arts Building on the Hattiesburg campus. Participants can come and experience a wide range of art making activities such as aluminum pouring, bookbinding, and learning the basics of the potter’s wheel. This free event is family friendly and participants will get to make things that they take home.

On Feb. 20, in collaboration with visiting artist Mary McDonnell, the dance program and USM faculty will perform as part of a closing reception to the “Slide” Exhibition at 6:30 p.m. in the Gallery of Art and Design. This event is free and open to the public.

Choreography will be inspired by Mary McDonnell’s expressive abstract paintings that visualize her sensory experience of the natural world. McDonnell’s practice is simultaneously meditative and active: her painstakingly layered washes of ink, paint, and turpentine suggest ambient noise and variegated light, while vigorous marks made with unconventional tools like bamboo, sticks, and rubber convey staccato notes and earthy physicality.

Later in the month, Southern Miss Theatre will present its production of Eugene O’Neill’s Ah, Wilderness from Feb. 20 to 23 at the Martha R. Tatum Theatre on the Hattiesburg campus.

Directed by Louis Rackoff, Ah, Wilderness is a nostalgic comedy by one of the greatest American playwrights set in the days when youth seemed innocent, family life seemed happy, and when there were unexpected and surprising opportunities found at every corner.

Performances will be on Feb. 20, 21, and 22 at 7:30 and on Feb. 22 and 23 at 2 p.m. Price of admission is $8 for students; $10 for faculty, staff, seniors, and military; and $15 for the general public.

All events, with the exception of the Dance Gala and Ah, Wilderness, are free and no experience is necessary.

From yoga in the gallery to learning the basics of the potter’s wheel, there is a community event for every taste. To curate your own Revelry 2020 schedule visit usm.edu/revelry.
