Science Café on the Coast Opens Spring Series

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Coast Library’s Science Café on the Coast begins its spring series with “Mississippi’s Pearl: Off-Bottom Oyster Aquaculture” Monday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. at Biloxi’s Margaret S. Sherry Memorial Library.

 

Jason Rider will discuss local oyster farming efforts, and how they are maintaining economically and environmentally sustainable farms to increase the annual oyster harvest.

 

Rider is the Oyster Extension Agent for the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. He manages the off-bottom oyster aquaculture program, which teaches potential and current commercial oyster farmers the basics of off-bottom oyster aquaculture.

 

Science Café offers those with minimal background in science the opportunity to meet and discuss issues in a relaxed social setting and is a collaboration between USM Gulf Coast Libraries, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Harrison County Library System, Long Beach Public Library, and Hancock County Library System.
